Who or What Was Jesus' Mother, Mary?

Each of the gospel writers approached the story of Jesus from different angles. Part of Matthew's angle was to prove that Jesus was eligible to be the Messiah.

Therefore, from Matthew 1:1 through 1:16, he recorded for posterity the lineage of Joseph, the husband of Mary, to prove Jesus was born of the lineage of David, ending with

Mt 1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
Mt 1:16
And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.

As in many cultures, adopted sons are every bit as eligible for the inheritances of their parents as "begotten" sons, so, since Joseph did not reject him as someone else's bastard son, Jesus would be eligible for any inheritances due any "son of David".

Furthermore, since part of the Jewish culture and inheritance had to do with certain tribes living in certain areas and their descendants inheriting their lands, many, if not most Jewish men married women from within their own tribe. That means, it is highly likely that Mary, herself, was from the lineage of David, a distant cousin of Joseph's, and Jesus, begotten of the Holy Spirit and Mary's egg, would therefore have David's blood in him from her. In fact, the lineage in chapter 3 of the book of Luke, dissimilar from that in Matthew, is looked upon by many as actually the lineage of Mary.

Lu 1:1 Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us,
Lu 1:2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us,
Lu 1:3 it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus,
Lu 1:4 that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.

As for the birth of Jesus, anyone who claims to be a Christian is very familiar with it. Here's Matthew's version followed by Luke's.

Mt 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
Mt 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.
Mt 1:20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
Mt 1:21 "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."
Mt 1:22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
Mt 1:23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."
Mt 1:24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife,
Mt 1:25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.

Lu 1:26 Now in the sixth month [of the pregnancy of John the Baptist's mother] the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
Lu 1:27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary.
Lu 1:28 And having come in, the angel said to her, "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!"
Lu 1:29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.
Lu 1:30 Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
Lu 1:31 "And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
Lu 1:32 "He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.
Lu 1:33 "And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."
Lu 1:34 Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?"
Lu 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

Lu 1:38 Then Mary said, "Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.
Lu 1:39 Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah,
Lu 1:40 and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.
Lu 1:41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Lu 1:42 Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
Lu 1:43 "But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Lu 1:44 "For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
Lu 1:45 "Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord."
Lu 1:46 And Mary said: "My soul magnifies the Lord,
Lu 1:47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
Lu 1:48 For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
Lu 1:49 For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name.
Lu 1:50 And His mercy is on those who fear Him From generation to generation.
Lu 1:51 He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
Lu 1:52 He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly.
Lu 1:53 He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty.
Lu 1:54 He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy,
Lu 1:55 As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed forever."
Lu 1:56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.

Lu 2:4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,
Lu 2:5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.

Lu 2:8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.
Lu 2:9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.
Lu 2:10 Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.
Lu 2:11 "For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
Lu 2:12 "And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger."
Lu 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
Lu 2:14 "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"
Lu 2:15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, "Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us."
Lu 2:16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger.

Lu 2:18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

Lu 2:19

But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.
Lu 2:20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

Mt 2:9 When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.
Mt 2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
Mt 2:11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Lu 2:33 And Joseph and His Mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him.
Lu 2:34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, "Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against
Lu 2:35 "(yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

Mt 2:13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him."
Mt 2:14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt,
Mt 2:15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son."

Mt 2:19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
Mt 2:20 saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child's life are dead."
Mt 2:21 Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.
Mt 2:22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee.

Lu 2:43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it;
Lu 2:44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day's journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances.
Lu 2:45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him.
Lu 2:46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.
Lu 2:47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.
Lu 2:48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, "Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously."
Lu 2:49 And He said to them, "Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?"
Lu 2:50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.
Lu 2:51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart.

Joh 2:1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
Joh 2:2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
Joh 2:3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine."
Joh 2:4 Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come."
Joh 2:5 His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."

Joh 2:12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.

Mt 12:46
Mr 3:31 -

Lu8:19-21

While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him.
Mt 12:47 Then one said to Him, "Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You."
Mt 12:48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, "Who is My mother and who are My brothers?"
Mt 12:49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, "Here are My mother and My brothers!
Mt 12:50 "For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother."

Mt 13:55
Mr 6:3

"Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas?
Mt 13:56 "And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?"

Joh 6:42 And they said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, 'I have come down from heaven'?"

Joh 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

Joh 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!"
Joh 19:27 Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

Ac 1:13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James.
Ac 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
