Hell, Hades, Eternal Torment How could a loving God allow his children to go through this?
Many people believe that when one dies, his or her soul goes
immediately to heaven or hell. See "Where do we go when we die?" for a
study on this subject. Biblically, there is a great deal more
evidence that everyone receives his/her reward at the same time. You might also want to refer to the study "What's the truth about Faith and Works?" This study, however, will be on the concept of an eternally burning hellfire, where the wicked will be punished for ever and ever. This is a concept that kept me out of the church for many years. Who wants to chain him- or herself to a God who delights in torturing his creatures? It wasn't until I did some indepth studying that it all came together for me and I saw how I had been deceived.
Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. Isn't Hades Hellfire? First, the Greek word Hades refers to their God of the lower regions, the nether world, the realm of the dead in which they believed. It was translated hell in the New Testament. We need to remember, however, that we are talking about Jews trying to teach Greeks a concept that was more important than whether there is a "realm of the dead". That concept was that everyone who has the opportunity to believe in Jesus but doesn't will be destroyed. They used a pagan concept to teach a Christian truth to pagans. Interestingly, the word is also translated once as the grave. Equally interestingly, in almost all instances where it appears in scripture, it could be translated the grave and make sense. Second, there are other words translated hell in Scripture: The Hebrew word sheol is translated grave (31), hell (31), and pit (3) in the KJV. The Greek word Geenna (pronounced gheh'-en-nah) is a reference to the valley of Hinnon where Jerusalem's city dump was located, where the waste of the city was burned. It is translated hell 9 times and hell fire 3 times. Tartaroo (tar-tar-o'-o) is the Greek word for a place regarded by Ancient Greeks as a place of suffering of the wicked dead. It was translated once in the KJV as "cast down to hell" and it referred to the "angels who sinned" and were "delivered into chains of darkness to be reserved for judgment" (doesn't sound like a firey burning torment to me). Other words I thought we should look at are torment and eternal and forever. If you think of any others, let me know. Obviously, we need to look at the context of these words. |
