Bible Study
There are thousands of "bible study guides" out there in the world today. I've used many of them during the course of my walk with God, and I have noted that there are several different kinds. 1. A noted scholar's interpretation of a particular scripture of the Bible. 2. A compilation of noted scholars' opinions of a particular scripture of the Bible. 3. A Church's doctrinal stance on a particular scripture of the Bible. 4. Personal opinions of a particular scripture of the Bible. 5. A noted scholar's topical Bible study. 6. A compilation of noted scholars' topical Bible studies. 7. A church's doctrinal stance on a Biblical topic. 8. Personal topical Bible studies. In every instance, Bible study is only as worthwhile as how it is carried out. Some people believe they are gifted with special understanding of scripture, to interpret it with the help of the Holy Spirit. They apear to be unaware that Scripture states that it is not "of any private interpretation". Some people use their knowlege of their surroundings to interpret scripture. They reduce God to the realm of their limited knowledge. Some people use the Scriptures themselves to interpret scritpure. They look up every instance of a word, related words, or a theme in the scriptures. Unfortunately, some pick and choose which scriptures they will study and which they will believe in to interpret the scripture or topic they're studying. They sometimes lose sight of the scriptures that state that we are to live "by EVERY word that proceeds from the mouth of God" and that "ALL scripture is given by inspiration and is profitable . . ." and that God said, "I am the Lord; I change not." "Spiritual things are discerned spiritually."
This is the scripture people use when forming their own personal interpretation of scriptures. They read a scripture and ponder it and try to come up with an interpretation of that scripture. Having automatically assumed that they are "in the Spirit", they believe whatever interpretation they come up with will be of God. Unfortunately, they cannot be sure which spirit they are in when they are studying. They could be struggling in their own human spirit, and when the "answer" comes to them, it may have come from either the desires of their own hearts or from Satan or one of his evil angels. A thorough knowledge of scripture, however, can help one avoid this problem. First, the above scripture simply means that because of our carnal natures, we cannot understand spiritual things. If we do manage to understand a few spiritual things, it will be because we have been enlightened by the Holy Spirit. What are spiritual things? Things like why God does what he does and how God does what he does. Things our carnal natures will never understand. Things we must take on faith. What things can we understand? Things like how God has dealt with mankind in the past and the promises he has made and prophecies he has given us concerning what will happen in the future. And how can we gain such understanding? By knowing the scriptures. God has given us ample descriptions of himself, the natural world, our own carnal natures and instructions on how to overcome them in the Bible. But he allowed these concepts to unfold in a "natural" sequence of examples of good and evil, of acceptable and unacceptable relationships with himself, and with a list of "rules" that show us how to love God and how to love each other. Why must we KNOW scripture? Honest comparisons of EVERY scripture dealing with any given subject will result in truth. If we don't know which scriptures deal with a given subject in order to compare them, how can we arrive at the truth? This is why there is so much confusion, Babylon, in the Christian Church today. This is why God is calling his people out of Babylon and into obedience.
Some people make Bible study a science. That is, as in the world of Science itself, they use different methods of study until they come up with one that proves what they want the Bible to say. Probably the majority of those who have at any time studied scripture have had preconceived beliefs of what scripture says and studied to find Biblical support for their beliefs. Some become surprised or shocked or sometimes mortified when they find that something they believe in and have been taught by those they trusted to know is not in the Bible. They turn to different translations or even translate scripture themselves to see if some kind of error has been made.
If they have an honest heart, these Bible Scholars do not twist scripture to support their beliefs. Instead, they eventually acknowledge their misunderstanding, align their belief with scripture, and continue their obedient walk with the Lord. This is fruitful Bible study and acceptable to the Lord. What is not fruitful or acceptable to the Lord is the twisting of scripture to fit one's beliefs or the acceptance of traditional teachings that are in direct opposition to scripture.
There is ample support in scripture for the idea that The Lord Our God, and he only, has the authority and power to set laws and times and customs, and that those who come after and try to change times and laws are Anti-Christ.
Bible study should not be a half-hearted endeavor.Honest study of scripture shows what is demanded by God of those who claim to worship him. That knowledge is gained by the complete and methodical study of his word. But knowing what scriptures says to do isn't enough. There must be a heart-deep desire to know and love God.
If it is God you are seeking, it is God you will find. If it is just instruction you are seeking, it is just instruction you will find. If you find God, the natural outcome will be to follow his instruction, which you will also find.
Jesus never set aside any of the Old Testament Scriptures.
The only part of the law that has been fulfilled so far are the sacrificial ordinances. Jesus put to death the ordinances that separate Jews from Gentiles by becoming the passover lamb for all who will accept his sacrifice.
If you want to know God, Study all the Scriptures. If you want to know what's going to happen in this world, study all the Scriptures. If you want to build your faith, study all the Scriptures. If you want to be more like Jesus, study all the scriptures, but keep Jesus in your mind and heart all the while. Keep your eyes on Jesus, his love, his perfection, and stop focusing on the faults of yourself, your family members, friends and acquaintences. Learn to use the capacity for intelligence and love that God has given you instead of listening to the accusations Satan puts into your mind. Find solutions for problems instead of bellyaching about them. Step out in faith and give your life for Christ instead of living for yourself.
